Connect your new phone to 2degrees data services

Congratulations on your new purchase! Whether you’ve got a brand-new or a new-to-you phone, when you pop a 2degrees SIM into your device, it should automatically retrieve the settings for text, calling and data services either from the SIM or via the network.

2degrees operates a 3G and 4G network. Most new phones should work with these technologies, so you should be sweet for streaming and sending out emails as soon as you put your SIM in your phone.

That said, there are always some exceptions, particularly if you bought your phone overseas or from a parallel importer.

If your data coverage on your new phone isn’t working as you think it should, the below tips should help you out.

Have an iPad? Check out this page to set your iPad up on the 2degrees mobile network

If your 2degrees account is in credit but you can’t get on the internet or receive WiFi signal, follow these steps

  • Check you have the latest software for your device – this ensures your phone performs at its best and automatically applies the right settings for 2degrees.
  • Check data roaming is switched on – this allows you to access the internet, email and MMS messaging across our entire network. It doesn’t cost any more to roam within New Zealand.
  • Ensure network is set on automatic – both network mode (LTE/GSM/WCDMA or 4G/3G) and operators/selection should be set to automatic.
  • Check your APN settings – your Access Point Name should be ‘internet’ to work across our entire network.
  • If you think your settings might not be right, we can send you settings for your device so that you can get connected quickly. Fill out the form on this page to get your settings sent to your mobile.
  • You can also enable WiFi Calling to use calling/texting services, if you have a WiFi Calling compatible device and are in an area with low cellular reception with access to good WiFi connection.

What does APN mean?

The Access Point Name (APN) is the name for the settings your phone reads to set up a connection to the 2degrees network.

Settings for parallel-imported mobile phones

You'll need to check the individual model specifications for your mobile. It will need to support one of the technologies our network operates on (3G (UMTS 900MHz and 2100MHz) and 4G (LTE 700MHz, 900 MHz and 1800 MHz). If you can't find your mobile's user manual, have a look at GSM Arena.

Many overseas providers lock their mobiles to their network. If this is the case, you'll need to get in touch with them to request the unlocking code.
