| Hei Rere Mai (‘So You Can Fly’) is a joint initiative by 2degrees and the Te Huarahi Tika Trust to increase Maori participation in the telecommunications industry. Announced in November 2011 by Minister of Maori Affairs, Hon. Dr Pita Sharples, the three-stage programme involves career advice, scholarships and career development at 2degrees: ScholarshipsHei Rere Mai Scholarships are open to Maori students studying towards ICT qualifications at the University of Auckland. Scholarships of up to $10,000 per annum are available to Maori from across New Zealand. Scholarship recipients may also be offered internships at 2degrees, so they can gain practical experience while studying. Jobs with a future2degrees is offering high-school leavers the chance to enter the exciting telecommunications industry via its Customer Care team. Those who show a passion for customers will be offered the opportunity to join a structured career programme. This involves on-the-job learning and paid study towards ICT qualifications, which can see them progress into specialist roles in the company’s IT and Networks departments. Career advice2degrees supports Accelerating Aotearoa’s Talent, a specialist charitable trust that provides career advice for Maori students in their last years of study at decile one and two high schools in Auckland. In addition to programme funding, 2degrees will facilitate the participation of Hei Rere Mai Scholarship winners and have Maori employees visit schools to advise young Maori on careers in the telecommunications industry.
